Overcoming Challenges: Difference Between Leader and Manager
Being a manager is not an easy task. From delegating responsibilities to handling workplace conflicts, there are numerous challenges that managers encounter on a daily basis. While some managers struggle to cope with these challenges, others have developed into true leaders who not only overcome challenges but also use them as opportunities to learn, grow, and excel. First-time or struggling managers often feel overwhelmed when faced with multiple challenges at once. They may lack the necessary experience, knowledge, and skills to manage their teams effectively. These managers may become easily discouraged and disheartened when things don’t go as planned, and it can affect their productivity and morale. Often, these struggling managers may resort to micro-managing or avoiding responsibilities altogether, leading to further complications and issues. On the other hand, managers who have developed into true leaders have a different approach to handling and overcoming challenges. These leaders are confident in their abilities and have a positive attitude towards obstacles. They understand that challenges provide an opportunity for growth and development. Therefore, they embrace these challenges and put their skills to the test. Moreover, true leaders use these opportunities to come up with creative solutions, explore new perspectives, and inspire their teams to work towards a common goal. I’ll use my own personal challenge that I’m having this week as an example. I have been having daily migraines this past week and a half. It has been a challenging experience. If you’ve ever had a migraine or are a migraine sufferer yourself, I’m sure you’re aware of how not only extremely painful migraines are, but also how draining and how disruptive they can be. When I look back at how I used to handle times like these when I experienced a time of daily migraines, it’s a complete one eighty of how I handle them now. My self-awareness and growth over these years of being on a management and leadership journey has taught me how to manage these migraines while still being positive and productive. Instead of letting my migraines get me down and dictate my life, I have learned to adjust my routine during this time to include taking guilt-free rest, nourishing my body with healthy foods and being sure to stay hydrated, and increasing my daily practice of relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation. Additionally, I have learned to communicate honestly with my team and set realistic expectations about my work output during this time. By being honest with my team, I’m better able to overcome this challenge while maintaining my productivity and motivation and minimizing the disruption to my work and my team. In sum, the difference between how first-time or struggling managers handle and overcome challenges versus managers who have developed into true leaders lies in their mindset, skills, and attitude. Leaders understand that every challenge is an opportunity to grow and learn. They don’t shy away from challenges but use them to inspire their teams and come up with creative solutions. Ultimately, this mentality is what sets true leaders apart from struggling managers. Did you find this blog post helpful?
